LEGISLATIVE ALERT SB554 SEPTIC TANKS SB 554 was amended and has passed the State Senate by one vote 24 to 23 and will be heard April 7th at 1pm in the House Environmental Matters Committee. This Legislation requires Mandatory replacement of septic systems with the Nitrogen Reduction System. These systems can cost up to $20,000 for installation and a annual cost for electric of $300 or more, plus maintenance. Also a violation fine of $8000. With Septic Tanks only contributing 5% of the pollution in the Chesapeake Bay our Legislators should be focusing on the major polluters not the home owners. The Anne Arundel County Health Department recently stated "The Department of Health is unaware of any scientific data that shows older septic systems don't work and are a health risk or detriment to our waterways". "An older septic system presents no additional risks providing the septic system is functioning properly".
