Subject: Annapolis Update 8A Energy, Speed Cameras, Illegals & Drivers Licenses

Annapolis Update #8A - Energy, Speed Cameras, Driver's Licenses for Illegals - Apr. 8, 2009

ENERGY SHUT-OFF POLICY. I want you to know that I voted against a bill that would prevent utility companies from shutting off energy to people in the summertime. The major utilities already have a correct, workable policy on this, so there is no reason for us to legislate their behavior. What this bill really does is to send a false message that you don't have to pay your utility bills either in the winter or in the summer, because the utility company won't be able to shut you off. Both I and the utility companies believe that this will lead to more people not paying their bills -- the "unpayables" -- the charges are then passed off to those of us who do pay their bills. This is just a "feel-good" piece of legislation, and only one other state has it, Texas. My question is, if states further south from us, like Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, which are much hotter in the summertime, and don't have such a law, why do we need it?

SPEED CAMERAS. It appears that speed cameras are coming to the State of Maryland, and their sole purpose is to bring in revenue to a government which, like a heroin user who can't get enough drugs, just can't get enough money. Speed cameras are supported by fruitcakes in the General Assembly, drug dealers who would rather be caught with a $40.00 ticket than being pulled over with a trunk-load of drugs, drunks who would much rather pay the $40.00 ticket than deal with a DWI, and child molesters and murderers. A large number of felony convictions start with a police officer pulling someone over for speeding. These cameras will replace the need for police officers and will truly be a pass for criminals. They will pick the pockets of the good, hard-working citizens of Maryland.

DRIVER'S LICENSES FOR ILLEGALS. The debate on driver's licenses for illegal aliens still has not ended. As you probably know, if it is bad for the citizens of Maryland it will pass in the last 20 minutes of the General Assembly, which means we must all be on our guard until this is over. If it does pass, this bad legislation would be a good candidate for referendum, where the people have the final say.
